Homework

Aims

Homework should enhance learning through encouraging children to develop organisational skills, self-discipline and independent thinking. It should act as a bridge between home and school to provide parents and carers with involvement in their children’s learning.

At Lordship, homework may be given for a number of reasons:

  •   to practise important skills e.g. reading and times tables;
  •  to enhance/build upon learning that has taken place in class;
  •  to expose children to concepts that they will soon be covering in class (pre-learning);
  •  for enjoyment;
  •  to promote creativity.

 Expectations

 In KS1 and 2 homework will be given out on a Friday and expected to be handed in by the following Wednesday.

 The amount of time that tasks are expected to take may vary due to the child’s age and ability but would typically be expected to take no longer than 30 minutes, with the exception being project based homework which may be ongoing over a number of weeks.

 We expect that parents/carers may wish to support their children when completing homework but it is important that the work produced still reflects the child’s understanding of the task. If a child is struggling with a task, they should be encouraged to speak to their class teacher so that it can be clarified and adapted if necessary.

 Once homework has been handed in, it will be acknowledged by the class teacher. This may include the ticking of correct answers, short feedback comments or simply an acknowledging comment/stamp.

 In addition to any formal homework that has been handed out, we also expect children to be reading regularly at home.

 Google Classroom

 All children have a Google classroom account which gives them access to their class page. This will be used to provide children with any activities and resources needed to complete their homework. Teachers may ask for homework to be submitted via Google classroom or in a physical homework book.

The CUSP Knowledge Organiser for each topic will be posted onto Google Classroom along with a link to Curriculum Visions which will enable children to do some optional pre-learning. We would encourage parents to support their children with this where possible.

Homework by Key Stage

 EYFS (Nursery and Reception)

Any homework given is informal and based on the children’s interests.

Home learning may be uploaded onto Evidence Me by parents. Teachers will then comment on this to ensure ongoing feedback between home and school.

Children are expected to read/share a book with an adult at least 5 times a week.

Weekly phonic sounds and ‘tricky words’ will be uploaded to Google Classroom every week.

 KS1 (Years 1 and 2)

Children are expected to read to an adult at least 5 times a week. Their reading diaries are monitored by class teachers.

An English or maths task will be handed out each Friday to be completed and returned on the following Wednesday. A copy of the task will be uploaded to Google Classroom.

Phonics home learning is uploaded to Google Classroom each week. This is an informal opportunity for pre-learning and is not handed in.

 KS2 (Years 3-6)

Children are expected to read at least 5 times a week and to practise timetables at least 2 times in order to know up to 12x12 by heart from Year 4 onwards. Children all have TTRS logins so that times tables can be learnt online at home.

English and maths homework will be handed out on Friday to be completed and returned on the following Wednesday.

CUSP spelling homework is uploaded to Google Classroom each week on Friday. Answers will then be uploaded on the following Tuesday so that children can self-check their work and hand it in on Wednesday.
